Vincentian Justice Day 2010 - 9th October 2010After the success of the last Vincentian Justice Day held in London in March the VMP justice group have announced they will be holding another Vincentian Justice Day in Newcastle on the 9th October 2010. So come along and spend the day with your fellow Vincentians sharing and further developing your knowledge, skills and confidence in campaigning on behalf of those most in need. New International President electedDuring recent sessions of the Extraordinary General Assembly of the International Confederation of the Society of St Vincent de Paul. held in Salamanca, the International Confederation elected the new President General of the International Society, Michael Thio from Singapore, who received 87% of the votes. “Remembering Romero” The 2010 Archbishop Romero LectureFr Thomas Greenan, a priest of Edinburgh diocese, now living and working as a missionary in the remote Petén area of Guatemala. is travelling home to Britain from Central America to give the 2010 Romero Lecture in June and July. He will speak at the Lauriston Centre in Edinburgh, St Aloysius Church in Glasgow, Liverpool Hope University, the Cathedral Hall in Leeds and at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square, London. Updated Ozanam Centre Pilgrims' Walk dates - 11th-16th October 2010The Annual Pilgrims' Walk, due to take place mid-May has been rescheduled and will now be taking place between 11th-16th October 2010. Vincentian Family 350th Anniversary Mass - Liverpool April 2010Vincentians from across the country, along with member organisations who are part of the Vincentian Family, joined together at Liverpool Cathedral on 24th April to celebrate the 350th Anniversary since the deaths of St Vincent de Paul and St Louise de Marillac. Representatives from the VMP, Daughters of Charity, St Vincent's School, the Brothers of Charity, the AIC, Depaul UK, Out There, Christopher Grange and the SVP, among others, put on an exhibition before the Mass in the crypt of the Cathedral followed by a procession into Mass. Photos from the event, which was extremely well attended by both members and friends of the Vincentian Family with around 2,000 people present, can be viewed on the following page... [29.4.10] |

Putting the Fun back into Fundraising!This summer why not help turn concern into action by raising vital funds for the work of the SVP? There are a number of events taking place across the country including 5km Super Hero Fun Runs - London (13th June) and Manchester (26th Sept), Skydives across the country, including a special jump in Maidstone (4th Sept), National Vincentian Golf Day in Stockport (10th Sept), 50 mile/100 mile Bike Rides in London (4th July) and a London to Paris Bike Ride (Various dates available). For those of you in the Leeds area the annual Leeds Sponsored Walk around the Eccup resevoir will also be taking place on the 26th September. UK Government and Catholic Bishops welcome state visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the United KingdomThe UK Government and the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Scotland, England and Wales today welcomed the forthcoming visit to the United Kingdom of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. At a joint press conference, they said that the Papal Visit represents an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen ties between the UK and the Holy See on global initiatives, as well as the important role of faith in creating strong communities. “Helping rebuild troubled lives” SVP Organ & Choir Concert at Leeds CathedralThe SVP in Leeds are organising a special fundraising event on Tuesday 30th March, featuring a unique mixture of classical music from the 16th to 21st centuries. The event, which is being sponsored by Capel (C.S) Ltd, is being held on Tuesday 30th March to raise funds for joint beneficiaries the Leeds Cathedral Support Choir, and the two SVP Special Works in Leeds; St Jude’s Furniture Store and St Vincent Support Centre. Calling all Super Heroes!If you have ever wanted to get involved in a 5km run, here is your chance. On Sunday 13 th June at Regents Park, London and Sunday 26th September at Heaton Park, Manchester, over 2,000 ‘Super Heroes' are expected to take part, raising over £100,000 for charity! Members, friends and staff of the St Vincent de Paul Society have taken part in these fun runs over the past couple of years and this year we are hoping to raise even more funds than in previous years! 3rd Vincentian Golf Day – 10th September 2010The Vincentian golf day has now become an established event in our calendar. It is an ideal way to extend friendships and make new ones. 'Basic Caring Communities': working with pact to help ex-offendersThe SVP is now working in alliance with pact (The Prison Advice & Care Trust) to support men leaving prison. The charities have come together to develop ‘Basic Caring Communities': small groups of trained volunteers who commit to working together to offer support, fellowship, advocacy and a sense of warm human community to men leaving prison. The alliance will be officially launched on 15th November, to coincide with this year's Prisons' Sunday, and will also be marked by an event in December to be held at Westminster Cathedral.
