Volunteers Week: 1st - 7th June 2010Volunteers' Week is an annual event which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. The Week plays a huge part in raising the profile of the millions of volunteers who regularly contribute to society, while inspiring others to get involved too. To highlight this contribution, there is a burst of activity during 1-7 June when a host of organisations from the public, private and charity sectors will hold parties and award ceremonies to thank their volunteers. and highlight their contribution to local groups and the wider community, while individuals are encouraged to use the Week to find out more about volunteering. Haitian Earthquake: Serving the people in the aftermathOn the 12th January 2010 a 7.0 strength earthquake struck Haiti. Its epicentre was 16 miles west of the capital Port-au-Prince. By 24th January 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had also occurred. The Daughters of Charity were hit hard as a result of the catastrophe with two of the Sisters losing their lives. Poverty and Homelessness Action Week 2010Poverty and Homelessness Action Week 2010 is taking place from 30 January to 7 February and this year is taking the theme This year's theme is "ENOUGH FOR ALL!". There are a number of resources available to download for free from the Action Week website including 12 Baskets, a collection of inspirational ideas; Guide for planning and running events; Media guide and press release template; Poster; Worship resources; Activities for children and young people; Enough for schools assembly and classroom ideas. Home access grants - free laptops and web access for low income familiesYou may know someone who could benefit from a new scheme offering grants to low income familes which covers a free laptop and web access for a year. If the family meets certain set criteria they may qualify for the Home Access grant. There are 270,000 of these first come first served government grants available, worth up to £528 each. A new home for St Vincent Support CentreAt the end of September the St Vincent Support Centre, Leeds moved into new premises, just a short way from their old home in York Road. The new Support Centre address is 82 York Road, Leeds, LS9 9AA. The new building has just been refurbished ready for the Support Centre to move in and new additions to the Centre include the new Café which is being run by Leeds based social enterprise “CaféCreate”. The Centre also has a brand new Community Shop at the rear. SVP Christmas National Christmas Carol Concert - 12th December 2.30pm St Chad's Cathedral, BirminghamCome and join us at the first national Christmas Carol Concert with readings by special guests. There is a wonderful Christmas Market a stone’s throw away! The Carol Concert is being held at 2.30pm on Saturday 12th December 2009 at St Chad’s Catholic Cathedral, Birmingham and will be featuring the John Fisher Choir, the Cardinal Wiseman Steel Band and the Maryvale Catholic Primary School choir performing a variety of festive songs and hymns. SVP Guitar Concert - presenting Professor Charles William PohlThe St Vincent de Paul Society is honoured to present Professor Charles William Pohl who will be performing classical guitar music and cross overs to raise funds for the Society. The SVP now has its first eBay shop selling rare and unusual items which people have donated but which might be better suited to a more specialized. A fine day for a garden party!The beautiful grounds of Jeddah House, in the picturesque village of Carlton, Bedfordshire were the setting for an SVP fundraising event hosted by Bedford District Council on the last day in May. The sun was shining and there was a pleasant summer breeze was in the air for the Northampton Garden Party, which managed to raise an impressive total of over £3000 for the Society. SVP Raises awareness in the Houses of ParliamentThe St Vincent de Paul Society recently had the opportunity of promoting the work we do across England and Wales with a week long exhibition held inside the Houses of Parliament. The exhibition was supported by John Battle, MP for Leeds West, a keen supporter of the SVP. The event provided a rare opportunity to showcase the work we do to Members of the House of Commons and the Lords, from membership level to the various Special Works operating across the country helping those who most need our help and assistance. Do it for Charity Fun Run update - LondonThis year's 5km Do It for Charity 2009 Fun Run series got off to a flying start when 15 runners representing the SVP completed the first run in Regent's Park, London on 10th May! VMP Petition and Strangers into Citizens March - UpdateThe VMP petition was presented to Parliament on 29th April in the House of Commons by the Rt Hon John Battle, MP for Leeds West. 11,125 signatures were collected by the Vincentian Family Petition asking the Government for the compassionate and just treatment of asylum seekers in the UK. Strangers into Citizens March - Update!The Strangers into Citizens March event on Monday 4th May 2009 begins with Mass at 10.30am (not as previously advertised as 11am or on 9th May) in Westminster Cathedral. After Mass members of the Vincentian family will gather on the plaza under the VMP banner and march on the Strangers into Citizens rally to Trafalgar Square.

Pope Benedict XVI commends the work of the SVPPope Benedict XVI recently commended the work of the SVP in a letter to President General Jose Ramón Diaz- Torremocha. In it he commended the work of the Society on its 175th Anniversary and offered encouragement to the membership world-wide as they continue to carry out the Vincentian work started by Frederic Ozanam and his companions in 1833. Feed my lambs - Statham Family Memorial informationTragedy struck recently when a family of 6 from Llandudno were killed in a five-vehicle collision. The family who were parishioners of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Llandudno had chosen “Feed my Lambs” as their favourite charity. “Feed my Lambs” provides food for starving babies in Sudan and their family and friends have requested that donations be made to the charity in their memory.
