	Volunteers Week: 1st - 7th June 2010 Volunteers' Week is an annual event which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. The Week plays a huge part in raising the profile of the millions of volunteers who regularly contribute to society, while inspiring others to get involved too. To highlight this contribution, there is a burst of activity during 1-7 June when a host of organisations from the public, private and charity sectors will hold parties and award ceremonies to thank their volunteers. and highlight their contribution to local groups and the wider community, while individuals are encouraged to use the Week to find out more about volunteering. 	World Week for Peace in Palestine Israel: May 29 - June 4 Organised by the World Council of Churches, churches from different denominations and related organizations will be joining in a week of advocacy and action for a just peace in Palestine and Israel . 	VMP Justice Day - 6th March 2010 The VMP Justice Group is holding a one day conference on the 6th of March for anyone who is interested in justice work. The aim of the day is to give Vincentians the knowledge, skills and confidence to become more involved in campaigning on behalf of vulnerable people. 	Haitian Earthquake: Serving the people in the aftermath On the 12th January 2010 a 7.0 strength earthquake struck Haiti. Its epicentre was 16 miles west of the capital Port-au-Prince. By 24th January 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had also occurred. The Daughters of Charity were hit hard as a result of the catastrophe with two of the Sisters losing their lives. 	Poverty and Homelessness Action Week 2010 Poverty and Homelessness Action Week 2010 is taking place from 30 January to 7 February and this year is taking the theme This year's theme is "ENOUGH FOR ALL!". There are a number of resources available to download for free from the Action Week website including 12 Baskets, a collection of inspirational ideas; Guide for planning and running events; Media guide and press release template; Poster; Worship resources; Activities for children and young people; Enough for schools assembly and classroom ideas. 	Haiti Earthquake: What the SVP is doing to help The SVP is supporting the Haiti Earthquake relief efforts via its Disaster Fund to help alleviate the terrible suffering facing survivors of the earthquake in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, which has left thousands dead and millions displaced and surviving in desperate conditions. 	Home access grants - free laptops and web access for low income families You may know someone who could benefit from a new scheme offering grants to low income familes which covers a free laptop and web access for a year. If the family meets certain set criteria they may qualify for the Home Access grant. There are 270,000 of these first come first served government grants available, worth up to £528 each. 	Parish and Supporter Relations Officer - pact pact is seeking a Parish and Supporter Relations Officer to provide administrative and database support to our growing number of individual and Parish donors. 	“It’s still ME, Lord” - CSAN Training Days on Dementia and Spirituality announced Over recent years there has been increasing awareness of the spiritual and pastoral needs of people with dementia and their carers. As a follow up to the success of their recently released DVD "It's still ME Lord", CSAN is organising training days, facilitated by Ben Bano who produced the DVD and was a guest speaker at last year's SVP National Meetings, on dementia and spirituality in February and March 2010. 	SVP Guitar Concert with Professor Charles William Pohl The SVP Guitar Concert featuring Professor Charles william Pohl which took place at the end of 2009 at Farm Street Church, London was a great success and well atttended by a number of guests, including SVP Vice President Greg Pelham, and many friends of the SVP. 	Archbishop Bernard Longley takes part in SVP Carol Service at St Chad's Cathedral Archbishop Bernard Longley took part in the St Vincent de Paul Society Christmas Carol Service in the Metropolitan Cathedral of St Chad, Birmingham, on Saturday, 12 December, his first public engagement in the Cathedral since he was Installed as the Ninth Archbishop of Birmingham, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. 	350th Anniversary Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool In April members of the Vincentian Family will be celebrating the 350th Anniversary year with a Holy Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool L3 5TQ on Saturday, 24th April 2010 at 2pm .The chief celebrant at this Mass will be Archbishop Patrick Kelly. 	Vincentian 350th Anniversary Art Competition - submit your entries now! Open to young and old alike and being promoted through schools and across the Vincentian Family, an art competition is being held to celebrate the 350th Anniversary. We are looking for artwork, whether it be painting, photography, sculpture or any other type of art which expresses Vincentian values and the ethos of the Vincentian Family. 	A new home for St Vincent Support Centre At the end of September the St Vincent Support Centre, Leeds moved into new premises, just a short way from their old home in York Road. The new Support Centre address is 82 York Road, Leeds, LS9 9AA. The new building has just been refurbished ready for the Support Centre to move in and new additions to the Centre include the new Café which is being run by Leeds based social enterprise “CaféCreate”. The Centre also has a brand new Community Shop at the rear. 	SVP Christmas National Christmas Carol Concert - 12th December 2.30pm St Chad's Cathedral, Birmingham Come and join us at the first national Christmas Carol Concert with readings by special guests. There is a wonderful Christmas Market a stone’s throw away! The Carol Concert is being held at 2.30pm on Saturday 12th December 2009 at St Chad’s Catholic Cathedral, Birmingham and will be featuring the John Fisher Choir, the Cardinal Wiseman Steel Band and the Maryvale Catholic Primary School choir performing a variety of festive songs and hymns. 	SVP Guitar Concert - presenting Professor Charles William Pohl The St Vincent de Paul Society is honoured to present Professor Charles William Pohl who will be performing classical guitar music and cross overs to raise funds for the Society. Join us at Farm Church, London at 7.30pm on the 5th December 2009 for a special evening with guitarist Professor Pohl who has studied classical guitar under Julian Bream (UK), Narciso Yepes (Spain) and Eliot Fisk (USA) and has performed frequent charity solo recitals worldwide. 	ACAT ( UK ) - ACTION BY CHRISTIANS AGAINST TORTURE CHRISTMAS CARD GREETINGS LIST - 2009 It is a tradition every year for ACAT members and churches to send greetings to prisoners at Christmas. Prisoners need our support all year and we can all take the opportunity at Christmas of telling them that they are not alone or forgotten. A card can mean such a lot to them. 	Join the Vincentian Family on the Pilgrimage to Paris 2010 To commemorate the 350th Anniversary of the deaths of St Vincent de Paul and Sr Louise de Marillac the Vincentian Millennium Partnership are organising a ‘350th Anniversary Vincentian Family Pilgrimage to Paris' for April 2010. 	Get your walking boots on! St Vincent's Support Centre helps the most vulnerable in Leeds providing counselling and educational services while St Jude's Furniture Store collects and redistributes good quality furniture without charge to those most in need within the Leeds area. For many years St Vincent's Support Centre and St Jude's Furniture Store in Leeds have held a sponsored walk in September. This year the 5 mile walk will be taking place on Sunday 27th September. 	Support the SVP on eBay! Did you know you can now support the work of the SVP via eBay? The SVP now has its first eBay shop selling rare and unusual items which people have donated but which might be better suited to a more specialized. The first SVP eBay shop is being run from the Brighton SVP Shop and plans are in the pipeline to roll out eBay shops at different locations around the country. 	Getting on their bikes for the SVP! 3 intrepid adventurers have now stepped forward to sign up for the London to Paris Bike Ride, to represent the SVP and raise funds for the work of the Society. Bernard Thurlow, and Jason and Neil Palmer are all currently training for the event and will be setting off on the 9th September 2009. 	A fine day for a garden party! The beautiful grounds of Jeddah House, in the picturesque village of Carlton, Bedfordshire were the setting for an SVP fundraising event hosted by Bedford District Council on the last day in May. The sun was shining and there was a pleasant summer breeze was in the air for the Northampton Garden Party, which managed to raise an impressive total of over £3000 for the Society. 	SVP Raises awareness in the Houses of Parliament The St Vincent de Paul Society recently had the opportunity of promoting the work we do across England and Wales with a week long exhibition held inside the Houses of Parliament. The exhibition was supported by John Battle, MP for Leeds West, a keen supporter of the SVP. The event provided a rare opportunity to showcase the work we do to Members of the House of Commons and the Lords, from membership level to the various Special Works operating across the country helping those who most need our help and assistance. 	Do it for Charity Fun Run update - London This year's 5km Do It for Charity 2009 Fun Run series got off to a flying start when 15 runners representing the SVP completed the first run in Regent's Park, London on 10th May! 	VMP Petition and Strangers into Citizens March - Update The VMP petition was presented to Parliament on 29th April in the House of Commons by the Rt Hon John Battle, MP for Leeds West. 11,125 signatures were collected by the Vincentian Family Petition asking the Government for the compassionate and just treatment of asylum seekers in the UK. Members, friends and supporters of the VMP were also out in force on the first Bank Holiday in May for the Strangers into Citizens rally in Trafalgar Square - protesting against current Asylum and Migration conditions in the UK. 	Strangers into Citizens March - Update! The Strangers into Citizens March event on Monday 4th May 2009 begins with Mass at 10.30am (not as previously advertised as 11am or on 9th May) in Westminster Cathedral. After Mass members of the Vincentian family will gather on the plaza under the VMP banner and march on the Strangers into Citizens rally to Trafalgar Square. In the Spring 2009 edition of the Vincentian Concern we highlighted how an asylum seeker from Zimbabwe named Esther had been assisted by her local SVP group, of which she herself had been a member. 	SVP Members' National Meeting - Sat 9th May 2009 This year's National Meeting for Members' of the SVP across England and Wales will be held at St Bede's Church, Basingstoke on the 9th May 2009. Speakers at the event, which will take the theme of "Changing lives for the better", will be covering a variety of topics including Systemic Change, Spirituality and Mental Health, preventing abuse of the elderly and working with prisoners and their families. 	Do It For Charity nationwide fun-runs - Do it for the SVP! Get ready to raise funds for the SVP at the approaching series of 5km Do It for Charity 2009 fun runs this summer! 	Pope Benedict XVI commends the work of the SVP Pope Benedict XVI recently commended the work of the SVP in a letter to President General Jose Ramón Diaz- Torremocha. In it he commended the work of the Society on its 175th Anniversary and offered encouragement to the membership world-wide as they continue to carry out the Vincentian work started by Frederic Ozanam and his companions in 1833. 	2009 Vincentian Millenium Partnership Spirituality dates announced The dates for 3 key VMP Spirituality retreats have been announced. They will be taking place in January, May and June and will be focusing on a range of different themes which will not only provide a time of relaxation and reflection but also encourage development of Vincentian values and spirituality. 	Feed my lambs - Statham Family Memorial information Tragedy struck recently when a family of 6 from Llandudno were killed in a five-vehicle collision. The family who were parishioners of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Llandudno had chosen “Feed my Lambs” as their favourite charity. “Feed my Lambs” provides food for starving babies in Sudan and their family and friends have requested that donations be made to the charity in their memory. 	Get ready to celebrate Silver Sunday! As Part of “Every Older Person Matters Policy” Westminster Council will be coordinating the promotion of Silver Sunday, a day in the national calendar – similar to Mothering Sunday – to celebrate older people. It is hoped that this will be a day when local councils, religious groups, charities and a wide range of community organisations and individuals will hold events for older people. [04.07.08]

	Vincentian Volunteers 2008-2009 programme now open to applicants! Looking for a gap year in the UK working with the poor? The Vincentian Volunteers programme is now open to applicants, providing a positive opportunity for young people to undertake interesting charity work for one year, living in community with fellow volunteers. 	SVP Conference assist with transport arrangements for Liverpool Pilgrimage St. Teresa's/Mary Magdalen's Conference Penwortham, were instrumental in helping to organise transport and help for the annual Archdiocese of Liverpool pilgrimage to the 900 year old shrine at Ladyewell at Fernyhalgh north of Preston on 10th May 2008. 	Walking in the footsteps of the pilgrims... 9 intrepid volunteers completed the first annual sposored pilgrims' walk to raise over £5000 for the Ozanam Centre, North Wales at the beginning of April. 	175th Anniversary celebrations This year sees the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Society by Frederic Ozanam and his companions in Paris. The SVP in England & Wales will be celebrating this at a number of events both locally and nationally. 	2008 Lourdes Pilgrimage - bookings now being taken! Dates for the annual SVP pilgrimage to Lourdes have been confirmed as Friday 10th October to Friday 17th October and bookings are now being taken. 	SVP Sudan Appeal Update Support for the Sudan Appeal which was launched last year has been phenomenal, with over £300,000 pledged so far over several years. A Mass for Migrants will be held at Wesminster Cathedral at 10am, and the procession will then leave from the Piazza for the walk to Trafalgar Square.
