The Gran's Scheme was introduced as part of SSVP programming in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique on September 26, 2010 and has been supporting ‘Grannys’ for over a decade.
The project was initiated as a response to the significant number of vulnerable citizens who were struggling to meet their basic needs including nutritious foods, medication, and personal hygiene. GRANs support the elderly individuals who are without family or medical help and, as a result of the lack of any adequate nationally organised social care, rely on the SVP to ensure their necessities are met. Despite the name, the scheme is open to both Gran's and Granddad's. The age range of the recipients is between 60 - 91 years and the scheme currently supports 11 individuals. These people are supported on the scheme until their passing.
To date a total of 24 people have been members of the scheme.
Each individual on the scheme receives just £15 a week contribution towards their accommodation, food, medicine and more.

The Granny Scheme supports these vulnerable citizens through the provision of essential funds to assist with:
- Housing
- Food
- Medicine
- Friendship
Importantly, the beneficiaries receive regular visits from the local SVP group which provides companionship and spiritual connection. An annual visit is also made to assess their overall condition and care.
Following the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean in July 2024 (image to the right), the SVP responded rapidly by ensuring two Granny's on the scheme were relocated from the wreckage of Carriacou to the relative safety of mainland Grenada.
In 2021, SVP Grenada began supporting Daryl. Daryl is unable to use his legs for walking, instead carrying himself on his knees. Additionally, he is nonverbal but has developed his own unique way of communicating. He lives alone in a small house close to his sister and her family, but has no source of income. Thanks to the support of the Granny Scheme, Daryl receives support for his accommodation as well as friendship and companionship. Daryl has expressed thanks to the local SSVP in Grenada.
