Safeguarding

The Society is privileged to be able to work with the most vulnerable people in our communities, but this privilege carries with it the burden of responsibility.   Therefore, safeguarding must be at the core of our work.

Reporting Concerns

If you believe that a child or adult has suffered or is in immediate risk of suffering significant harm you must contact police immediately by dialling “999".

For other safeguarding concerns, at the first possible opportunity, contact:

  • SVP National Safeguarding Manager Catherine Kerr at 07796 140897 or catherinek@svp.org.uk who may escalate some concerns to other statutory bodies such as Children's Services or multi-agency safeguarding hubs.

Our Safeguarding Commitment

The Society is committed to:

  • Actively promoting  the empowerment and well-being of adults and children we may come into contact with.
  • Recognizing that everyone has the right to live their life free from violence, fear and abuse.
  • Recognizing that adults and children have the right to be protected from harm and exploitation.
  • A zero tolerance for abuse and holding those responsible to account.

Safeguarding in the Society is carried out within the framework set out in the Care Act 2014 Social Service, Well-being Act (Wales), Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018 and other associated statutory and best practice guidance. We liaise  closely  and openly with statutory agencies to ensure all concerns or allegations of abuse which are raised are promptly reported and responded to, victims supported and perpetrators held to account.

Our safeguarding policies and procedures reflect those of the Catholic Church.

Anyone who brings concerns or allegations to the notice of the Society will be responded to sensitively, respectfully and seriously in a timely manner.  In line with the Public Disclosures Act of 1998, anyone with a safeguarding concern may report such concern made in good faith without fear of repercussion.

Accountability

The Board of Trustees is ultimately responsible for the development and effective implementation of all safeguarding policies and procedures. The Board is also responsible for providing adequate resources throughout the Society for this purpose.

Those responsible for day-to-day implementation of safeguarding policies are:

  • Safeguarding Committee
  • National Safeguarding Manager
  • Central Council Safeguarding Officers
