The Camino de Santiago translates to the “Way of St James”.
It is a network of pilgrims ways leading to the shrine of the apostle James in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
St. James the Apostle was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Spanish legends holds that St James had spent time preaching the gospel in Spain, but returned to Judea upon seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary on the bank of the Ebro river (Spain).
Tradition holds that St James’s remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem to northern Spain, where he was buried.
The Camino network was created and established in the beginning of the 9th century, following the discovery of the relics of the apostle, Saint James the Great. The Way of St. James became a major pilgrimage route of medieval Christianity from the 10th Century onwards.
Today, nearly half a million people walk the Camino de Santiago each year!
There are three key objectives for the Camino de Santiago 2026.
Community building
Awareness raising
Fundraising
There are three routes available for you to choose from. An outline of each route is below, but please also view the information pack for more detail:
Each route is just over 100km and you will be walking between 12 - 28km per day. It is vital that you ensure you are capable and fit enough to complete the walking. A fitness training plan will be provided.
View the webinar pack here to find out more about each route.
£1,500 is the key fundraising target, and you’ll have plenty of support to help you reach it.
Once you get started, you might be surprised by how easily the donations come in—and by the generosity and encouragement you’ll receive along the way. You will receive support from the Camino team, the fundraising team, and your fellow walkers, in reaching this £1500 target.
Aiming high can truly make a difference, with every pound raised bringing hope to those who need it most. That said, this is a target—not a minimum requirement—so please don’t let it put you off joining the Pilgrimage.
The money raised will be split 50/50 between your Conference/chosen project and SVP National.
The cost to attend the trip is £915 per person.
This includes twin-room accommodation, breakfast & dinner, tour guide, Pilgrim Passport, airport transfer upon arrival, SVP t-shirt, and a route & prayer book.
This does not include: Flights, travel insurance, lunch.
We recommend budgeting 20 EUR per day for lunch. Flight costs will be dependent on your nearest airport and chosen route.
We do not recommend booking flights just yet, as they will be at their most expensive and not all flight times have yet been released.
Single rooms are available by-request only and will cost an estimated £200 extra. Please contact camino@svp.org.uk to discuss further.
This pilgrimage is open to anyone aged 18 or over.
You do not have to be an SVP Member to attend - the pilgrimage is open to friends, family, parishioners, SVP supporters, volunteers, staff, or anyone interested in joining.
Every walker should be aware of the minimum fundraising commitment and be able to complete the necessary walking.
