The Heart of the Local Community
SVP St Vincent's shops are 'at the heart of their local community' according to a feature published by The Catholic Universe.
Kate Nightingale who heads up the SVP's Community Support Projects says in the piece: "St Vincent's are more than just charity shops. Our employees and volunteers are sympathetic to the aims of the SVP, and where ever possible, extend the work of our 10,000 members, supporting and signposting customers who are often vulnerable people."
Steve Milburn, area manager for the North East describes the high levels of unemployment and low morale in his local region following the collapse of the mining, shipbuilding and steel industries in his area. "There can be a sense of hopelessness in some places due to limited opportunities...However, St Vincent's shops bring hope. In some areas we are the only community shop. The shops provide employment, build people's self esteem and provide work experience to help school leavers."
