At 68 years old, Jan Cruikshanks is stepping outside her comfort zone and giving up the comfort and safety of her own bed for one night to raise vital funds and awareness for people experiencing homelessness in Newcastle.

By taking part in a Sleep Out, she hopes to shine a light on the realities faced by people who have no safe place to call home and raise money for St Vincent’s Newcastle, which provides practical support and hope to people experiencing homelessness and hardship.

For one night, the Catering Supervisor at St Vincent’s Newcastle, will experience sleeping outdoors, away from the warmth and security that many of us take for granted.

“While one night cannot compare to the reality of sleeping rough night after night, particularly in the face of uncertainty, isolation and the challenges of finding somewhere safe to stay, I hope this small act will encourage others to think about the issue and take action,” she said.

St Vincent’s Newcastle, part of the St Vincent de Paul Society (England and Wales), which works to support some of the most vulnerable people in the local community. Through practical assistance and a welcoming community space, it helps people access essentials such as food, clothing and toiletries, alongside advice, support and opportunities to work towards a more stable future.

By taking on this challenge at 68, Jn is helping to support this vital work and ensure St Vincent’s Newcastle can continue to be there for people when they need it most.

All funds raised will support the work of St Vincent’s Newcastle, helping provide essential services and practical support to people experiencing homelessness and those at risk of losing their homes, for more information on how to support, visit: Vinniesnew Newcastle is fundraising for St Vincent De Paul Society (SVP England and Wales)
