World Day of the Poor - Help Lift a Life

world day of the poor

Kindness is a powerful, transformative force that brings people together from every background, breaking down barriers that so often divide us. This World Day of the Poor, we mark the launch of the SVP’s Help Lift a Life Christmas Appeal, a campaign that calls each of us to recognise the dignity of those who are struggling and to help lift them up with hope.

Since the Society’s beginnings in 1833, kindness has been at the heart of everything our members, volunteers and supporters do. It is through this spirit of compassion that we are able to reach out to those who need us most. Whether it is the gift of companionship, the reassurance that someone cares or the hope of a better tomorrow. The Society remains a steady hand for anyone seeking help.

Our roots in England and Wales stretch back to January 1844, when a friend of Frédéric Ozanam proposed establishing a new Conference here. By the end of that same year, four Conferences had formed and opened the first of many doors through which people in need could find comfort, guidance and hope. More than 180 years later, that mission continues with the same dedication and warmth.

As we reflect on the meaning of kindness today, we are invited to take simple steps that make a real difference. Will you consider donating to this year’s Christmas Appeal to help lift a life and ensure we can continue supporting all who turn to us during the festive season?

Every contribution whether large or small, helps us offer life-changing support to thousands of vulnerable people across England and Wales. Your generosity sustains our work, enabling us to provide practical help, companionship, and a sense of belonging to anyone who needs it, regardless of faith, circumstance or background.
