A local charity is making an appeal for volunteers as the need for their services continues to grow in the local area.
Located on New Bridge Street, St Vincent’s Newcastle is a thriving hub for the local community and beyond. It provides free-for-all wellbeing activities every day of the week, a Cost-of-Living market on Thursdays which gives shoppers the opportunity to buy low-cost items such as clothing, electricals, furniture and other household goods.
Recently the centre opened its new community pantry which gives locals the opportunity to buy everyday essentials at a fraction of the cost of a regular supermarket - a dignified way to shop on a budget without the need to turn to a food bank.
Alongside this, the centre also runs its community lunch, Vinnie’s drop-in which is currently at full capacity and serves a hot 3-course meal to more than 150 people a week.
“Demand for our services continues to grow, and we need more compassionate and kind people who are happy to help out here at the centre,” explains Centre Manager, Rebecca Stevenson-Read.
“Even just a few hours a week would be incredible, we have so much going on at the centre we can find anything to suit what your skills are. By having more helping hands, it means that we can continue to help those in the community who rely on our services.”
National Volunteers Week, which runs from 3rd – 9th June, is an annual celebration which highlights and shows appreciation for old and new volunteers across the UK. During this time, it is encouraged that people use this opportunity to try their hand at volunteering to see how they can help their local community.
