Fundraising ideas

Other ideas include a "Smarties Appeal" - hand out tubes of smarties for the donor/family to eat, then they can fill the tube with notes or coins, and return the following week/month.

Packing list

A full packing list will be shared shortly. In the meantime, here are some items to consider. This packing list has been designed to help you pack appropriately and remember essential items. However, please ensure you review it and consider your own needs.

Top tips:

  • Luggage - Your main luggage item will be transported for your each day to your next accommodation, so you will not need to carry it whilst on the Camino. The maximum weight for daily luggage transfer is 20kg. Your airline may have a smaller limit though, so ensure you check this.
  • Daily backpack - You will want to bring a small backpack or bag to use whilst walking, that can carry items such as water, sun cream, waterproofs, snacks, camera, etc. This item should be comfortable on your shoulders and weatherproof. We recommend using this backpack on practice walks, so that you get used to it.
  • Get used to your clothing/equipment - If you are purchasing new shoes, or trying walking sticks for the first time, do this a few months in advance so you can get used to it.
  • Appropriate clothing - Nearer the time, you will also want to be checking the weather to ensure your clothes are appropriate. However, weather can turn quick so it is best to be prepared for all possibilities. Even if the forecasted weather is sun, we recommend brining a waterproof just in case.
  • Essentials - passport, medicines, visa (if necessary), travel insurance information, EHIC card, etc.
  • Items to consider - clothes, toiletries, shoes (walking shoes plus you may want flip flops or other comfortable shoes for the evening), blister plasters, sunglasses, suncream, socks (lots of spare socks!), diary if you want to keep a record of each day, plug adapter, etc.

The full packing list is available here

Footwear

Top tip! Purchase the shoes you will be walking in earlier rather than later. You want to have the time to slowly break your shoes in, and shape them to your feet, in order to prevent blisters. We recommend you purchase your chosen shoes at least 3 months in advance.

Walking boots vs Trainers? This comes down to personal preference. View these pages for more information: "What footwear is best?" and "Choosing the rights shoes for you".

Your walking group & zoom check in's

These zoom sessions will provide you with a chance to get to know the other walkers, check in with each other on how your fundraising is progressing, discuss any training plans, and ask any questions.

July 2025 - You can find a summary of the meeting notes here.

September 2025 - You can find a summary of the meeting notes here

December 2025 - You can find a summary of the meeting notes here. A recording of the session is also available here and a copy of the presentation shared can be viewed here.

Our next meeting

Our next meeting will be in early March 2026. Please complete this poll by 12th December to determine a suitable date: https://forms.office.com/e/UuJiP9nXQh?origin=lprLink

We will then have a final check-in session on Wednesday 8th April, 6-7pm for any last-minute questions or updates.

Flights and travel

It is the responsibility of each walker to book their own flights.

You can find here some guidance on which airports or travel routes might be suitable for you. Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) is driving distance from all starting points, and does have more flights to from the UK, so it may be easier for you to book a return flight. Airport transfer upon arrival will be arranged and is included in your booking costs.

To confirm, arrival is to be on Saturday 11th April and the walking will begin on Sunday 12th April. For departure, we will be attending Pilgrim’s Mass on the Friday evening at 7.30pm and checkout from your accommodation on Saturday 18th April will be 11am.

Flight prices change constantly, as does the possibility of additional flight times being made available. It is up to you to decide when to book your flights.

A few useful sites for checking flight options are SkyScanner, Rome2Rio, and Google Flights.

Advice to walkers

Members who have previously completed the pilgrimage themselves have shared the following advice:

  • Take plenty of spare socks, take plasters!
  • Take water with you all the way.
  • So you never forget, what will be an extraordinary experience, take lots, and *lots* of photographs!
  • Enjoy it!
  • You might want to take a rosary with you.
  • When walking as a group, be conscious that some people may like to talk, but some people may want to walk in silence and reflect for a bit.
  • Kate Nightingale, SVP CEO, walked part of the Camino in May 2025. Click here to read about her experience.
