A light that will never go out...
It is with deepest regret that we announce the deaths of the following valued members, staff and volunteers
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Ann, a cherished member of the SVP family whose selfless service, unwavering faith and compassionate spirit touched countless lives.
Ann was a truly special person who left us far too soon. She embodied the Society’s mission of turning concern into action, dedicating herself wholeheartedly to helping others and ensuring that those in need felt seen, heard and supported. Kind, compassionate and always ready to listen, she gave generously of her time, energy and heart to everyone she encountered.
Throughout her years of service, Ann worked tirelessly to support others, raise funds and strengthen connections within the communities she served. Through her faith and her actions, she brought hope, love and dignity to those facing difficult circumstances. Her commitment to the Society’s mission was evident in everything she did.
Ann’s contribution to St Peter’s Conference was immense. Her innovation, constant optimism and willingness to embrace new ideas inspired all who worked alongside her. She played a vital role in developing collaboration between Conferences, particularly with St Michael’s and the Furniture Hub, helping to extend the reach and impact of our work. Nothing ever seemed too much for Ann. Whatever the challenge, she approached it with enthusiasm, determination and a smile.
Those who had the privilege of working with her will remember not only her dedication but also her warmth, humour and infectious positivity. With Ann, there was always another idea, another opportunity to help, another way to make a difference.
Sometimes we meet people who profoundly change the way we see the world and the way we carry out our work. For many of us, Ann was one of those people. She inspired not only through what she achieved, but through the way she treated others with kindness, patience, generosity and love.
Perhaps Ann’s greatest legacy is the example she leaves behind: to care more deeply, to listen more patiently and to love others as she did. The lives she touched are countless, and her influence will continue to be felt throughout the Society and the communities she served.
We mourn the loss of a colleague, a friend and an inspiration. Yet we also give thanks for the gift of her life, her faith and her extraordinary service.
Ann will be sorely missed, fondly remembered and never forgotten.
Rest in peace, Ann.
Austin Fagan, a devoted servant of the SVP and a former National President, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of faith, leadership and tireless commitment to charitable works. He will be remembered not only for his guidance at the National level, but also as a passionate advocate for the beatification of Frederick Ozanam, whose vision of compassion and social justice deeply inspired his own life’s work.
Throughout his years of service, Austin embodied the values of dedication and humility. His leadership was marked by integrity and a steadfast commitment to supporting those in need, strengthening the mission of the Society and inspiring others to live out their faith through action. His efforts to promote the cause of Frederick Ozanam reflected both his deep spirituality and his belief in the enduring relevance of Ozanam’s example.
Austin’s passing is a profound loss to all who knew him and to the wider community he served so faithfully. It is hoped that a full tribute will be paid to his many contributions and the lasting impact of his work.
His funeral will take place on Wednesday, May 6 2026 at 12:30 pm at St Thomas More Church, Middleton, Manchester. Family, friends, and members of the Society will gather to honour his life, celebrate his achievements, and commend him to eternal rest.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
Rest in peace Peter
St John XXIII Conference are sad to report that Peter Smith, Conference and District President, died suddenly on the 27 August 2025 at the age of 58.
Peter was a very active member, not only of the SVP but also of the Metanoia group in Preston. He also enjoyed being a Steward at Preston North End's games at Deepdale.
A good friend and somebody you could rely on, he was enthusiastic and conscientious. A member of the SVP for 23-years, he will be sadly missed by everybody who knew him.
Rest in peace Peter
Holy Cross & St Francis Conference, Sutton Coldfield, are sad to report that one of it's member's, Brigid Moyles, passed away on 29th August 2025 - at the age of 86.
Brigid was a very active and committed Conference member for over 30 years, retiring only a few months before her passing.
Much loved over the years by all her fellow SVP members; Brigid will be sadly missed however her legacy will live on as her daughter, Mary, and granddaughter, Kiera, have now joined the SVP.
Rest in Peace Brigid.
Christ The King and St Brigid's Conference, Cardiff, is sad to report that one of its retired members Hubert (Bert) Byard, passed away on 12th August at the age of 89.
Bert was very active in the Parish and was a dedicated Conference member for many years. He particularly enjoyed visiting beneficiaries and helping them in all sorts of ways - gardening, DIY tasks (he was a qualified electrician) and anything else he could do to assist.
He was also a keen rugby fan (as a player and referee - a great armchair referee in later years apparently!), a member of Tredegar Male Voice Choir and a committed fundraiser for Cerebral Palsy, a cause which was very dear to his heart.
Rest in peace Bert.
In memory and thanksgiving for Peter Bell - 26/11/1924 -14/08/2025.
Peter Bell was a member of the SVP in St Walburga's and St Mary's parish in Shipley, West Yorkshire for many years from the 1950s through to 1990.
He served as Treasurer for many years and as President. Through the SVP, he offered support to local people in need throughout that period.
He was described by one of his peers as a gentle and self-effacing man who was respected and revered by his colleagues in the SVP.
He died peacefully aged 100-years at The Beeches, Menston. He will be sadly missed and his family and friends will treasure memories of his life as a loving father, skilled artist and engineer, for his service to the cause of peace and justice and not least for his contribution to the work of the SVP
Rest in peace Peter.
