We turn concern into action by working with prisons. This can take the form of visiting or writing letters to people in prison. Spending time with people is our greatest gift. SVP groups have also worked with probationary services by providing clothes to those leaving prison, as well as supporting ex-offenders.
SVP Working with Prisons
How you can help
There are many ways you can get involved in the SVP's presence and work in prisons. Getting involved in prison work with the SVP in England and Wales can be a rewarding way to make a meaningful impact in the lives of prisoners and their families. Take a look below at how you can get involved.
The SVP relies heavily on volunteers for its prison outreach programs. Volunteers can engage in different aspects of prison work, such as:
- Prison visiting: Offering emotional and spiritual support to prisoners.
- Rehabilitation programs: Assisting with educational or life skills programs.
- Family support: Helping to support the families of prisoners.
- Post-release support: Aiding with the reintegration process for released prisoners.
The SVP is organised into local groups called "Conferences," which focus on providing support within the community. You can join a local Conference, which might be involved in prison work, or collaborate with other groups involved in outreach. Being part of a local group can also offer support as you engage in prison work.
SVP works closely with prison chaplaincies, so if you have a particular interest in spiritual care, you may be able to collaborate with or volunteer within a prison's chaplaincy team. This role often involves offering religious services, organizing prayer groups, and providing spiritual support.
Advocacy and awareness: Raise awareness about the issues faced by prisoners and the work that SVP does by sharing information with your community, church, or school. This can help foster a culture of understanding and support for prisoners.
